Paracentesis/Abdominal Tap
An abdominal tap is a procedure to remove fluid from the abdomen. Normally, the abdomen contains only a small amount of fluid. In certain conditions, large amounts of fluid can accumulate in the abdomen. Possible causes for this include infection and cancer.
The test is performed to determine the cause of the fluid accumulation or to relieve the symptoms due to the fluid accumulation.
Preparation
There is no preparation for this test but you may have a blood test just prior to the procedure to evaluate your bloods ability to form a clot. You will be asked to sign a consent form.
Procedure
For testing, you will be asked to lie on a bed or exam table on your back. A small area on your abdomen will be cleansed and injected with a numbing medicine (anesthetic). The anesthetic may sting or burn when first injected. A needle is then inserted 1-2 inches into the abdomen. Sometimes a small incision is made to help insert the needle. You may experience a pressure sensation when the needle is inserted but this is usually brief.
The fluid, sometimes up to several liters, is then removed. The needle is removed and a bandage is placed over the needle site. If an incision was made, one or two stitches may be used to close it.
Keep the bandage on and dry for the next 24 hours. You may take Tylenol or Advil at home if the feel pain after the anesthetic wears off.
The procedure typically takes 30-60 minutes to perform.
