Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. It is performed to evaluate the valves and chambers of the heart.

It assesses the pumping function of the heart as well as heart murmurs.

Preparation

There is no special preparation for this test.

Procedure

For testing, you will be asked to disrobe from the waist up and lie on an examination table on your back. Electrodes will be placed onto your chest to allow for an EKG to be done. A water-based conducting gel will be spread on your chest and a handheld probe, called a transducer, is then moved over your chest. You may feel a slight pressure on your chest from the transducer. You may be asked to breathe in a certain way or roll over on your left side.

There are no known risks associated with this test.

An echocardiogram takes approximately one hour to perform.
