| How Drug Works: Acyclovir interferes with the virus making DNA, so the virus cannot reproduce. Acyclovir is used to treat herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and cytomegalovirus. |
| How Drug Is Given: Acyclovir is given by mouth, by vein, or by applying ointment to the skin. The dose depends on your size, how it is given, and the reason you are taking the drug. If you are taking the oral form, keep the medicine in a tightly closed container away from heat and moisture and out of the reach of children and pets. |
| How Should I Take This Drug? Take this drug exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or nurse to explain them to you. |

| Precautions: All drugs used to fight microorganisms can cause allergic reactions. Stop the drug and tell your nurse or doctor right away if you develop a rash, hives, red blotches on your skin, difficulty breathing, or chest pain. |
| The dose of acyclovir will be reduced if you have any kidney problems. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function through blood tests while you are receiving acyclovir, especially when you receive it in the vein. |
